The year 2018 has been an amazing year for Nollywood. We have seen the uprising of more and more home-made films topping the Nigerian box-office and raking in millions of Naira – rewarding the hard work and creativity put-in by the new wave of filmmakers in the industry today. Movies like ‘New Money’, ‘King of Boys’ and most recently, ‘Chief Daddy’ are dominating the Nigerian box office trumping Hollywood big names like Mission Impossible, Ant Man, Spiderman, Aquaman, The Meg, amongst many others.

It may be the exciting and refreshing new movie plots or the new attention to detail paid to the cinematography and screenplay of these new wave movies, or perhaps the more strategic investments in Public Relations, alongside the engaging and ‘outside-the-box’ themed premieres which seems to have become the new trend – bringing more attention to the movies as they arrive at the box-office. Altogether, these deliberate and strategic actions taken by the stakeholders of the ‘new Nollywood’ are positioning Nigerian films in their rightful places in the box-office.

Validating this trend, over the past week, we saw ‘Chief Daddy’ taking over the number 1 spot in the Nigerian box office, beating Hollywood big names like Aquaman, Creed 2 and even the Animated Spider-man movie to take over the top spot, raking in a gross earning of N76.63 million in the past week alone (December 14 – 20).
